DELILLO, DON. Libra.

MESSING WITH HISTORY DELILLO, DON. Libra. 8vo, 1/4 cloth; crisp dust jacket. first edition. New York, 1988

  • Notes: with two tlss about libra written to a reader in Ohio. Libra was DeLillo''s novel about Lee Harvey Oswald and the fictional speculation of the events leading up to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. "It is a difficult book for me to escape from, mainly because the real people, mainly Oswald and Ruby but others as well, don''t retire into permanent residency in print so easily as fictional characters. They''ll probably live in my mind for quite a while longer as haunting presences -- but that''s the price a novelist pays for messing with history." On Oliver Stone''s movie: "The rest of the reason [why no one took him to task for the book] is Stone''s own overheated theory, which is so incredibly inclusive in its roster of conspirators that I''m surprised he left out Gladys Knight and the Pips. Come to think of it, where was Gladys in November `63?" Each a single 8vo leaf, folded, 6 January, and 27 March 1992; with postmarked envelopes.
