Crusade for Freedom: Help Truth Fight Communism, a press kit in support of Radio Free Europe.

New York: The Advertising Council, September [1950]
Printed portfolio, 12½ x 9½ inches, containing a cover letter and 12 posters on 7 sheets as described below; minor wear. In an unused mailing envelope "Attention of the Advertising Manager," worn with tape repairs.

  • Notes: This printed portfolio is titled "Crusade for Freedom: Help Truth Fight Communism." It was prepared by the advertising firm Hewitt, Oglivy, Benson & Mather. It consists of a cover letter by volunteer coordinator Allan Brown, and 12 different proposed advertisements. Corporations were invited to place these ads in magazines to support the cause, and also burnish their corporate credentials for patriotism. The posters are intended as samples for magazine ad placement, with each marked at bottom "Contributed in the public interest by SPONSOR'S NAME."

5 posters, each 21 x 16 inches, folding to fit into the portfolio.  Titles include "The Commissar Lies, I Heard it from Radio Free Europe!"; "Read How Truth Fights Communism Behind the Iron Curtain"; "Slash the Red Tentacles Smothering Asia"; "Mr. Jankowski . . . Your Son Escaped . . . He is Safe in Cleveland"; and "Give Us This Day . . . Our Daily Truth."

A tri-fold with 3 slightly smaller posters, 17¼ x 11½ inches, on one folding sheet: "Here's How You Can Help Truth Fight Communism"; "Behind the Iron Curtain, They Want the Truth"; and "Wanted: 2 More Transmitters to Help Truth Fight Communism!"

4 smaller posters, 11½ x 8½ inches, on one folding sheet: "Commissioner Joins Drive to Help Truth Fight Communism!"; "No Iron Curtain Can Stop It!"; "Czechoslovakia's Bob Hope Tells How You Can Help Truth Fight Communism"; and "They Know the Truth About Mr. Stupinsky!"
