DENOUNCING THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACTS (BUSINESS.) HUNTINGTON, COLLIS P. Letter Signed, to A. A. Low, President of the New York Chamber of Commerce,
DENOUNCING THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACTS (BUSINESS.) HUNTINGTON, COLLIS P. Letter Signed, to A. A. Low, President of the New York Chamber of Commerce, discussing the ill effects of the Chinese Exclusion Act (i.e. the Scott Act of 1888) and requesting that the Chamber issue a public statement denouncing it. 2 1/2 pages, three 4to sheets; ink received stamps on the first sheet, the first page unevenly toned, usual folds. New York, 24 November 1888
- Notes: "... I suppose you felt as most other people did, last Summer, when Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, that it was an unworthy proceeding which nothing by the necessities of a partisan struggle could have brought about... It seems that without uttering a word, or lifting a finger, the Chinese are enabled to retaliate effectively against our commerce, so that we have not only offered them a wanton affront, but also injured ourselves in a two-fold way: by excluding a tractable and cheap labor which we very much need to build up our desolate places; and by the loss of a valuable trade... Is not this a heavy price to pay for the luxury of the hoodlum vote of California (for I believe the fanatical hostility to the industrious Chinamen is limited to California, where the Irish Catholics swing the balance of power)?..."
