(DESIGN / FASHION / ART DECO.) Croquis Parisiens: Dress Edition for the Spring / Summer Season 1930.

(DESIGN / FASHION / ART DECO.) Croquis Parisiens: Dress Edition for the Spring / Summer Season 1930. One bound volume of 11 fascicles (5 for Spring and 6 for Summer) by the Atelier Bachwitz, containing a total of 180 lithographic fashion plates with hand watercoloring, numbered and captioned in lower margins; typewritten design lists in French translated from the German bound into beginning of each part. Sheets measure 336x217 mm; 13 1/4x8 1/2 inches. Bound into plain 3/4 brown cloth over boards, soiled; internally clean but for some scattered and light foxing and occasional offsetting. Paris: Beaux Arts des Modes, 1930

  • Notes: A beautiful and detailed collection of Art Deco seasonal fashions, many with extensively hand-detailed patterns and coloring. The plates feature women in various poses modeling the main design, with one to three insets showing the verso in color and sometimes simpler line-drawn pattern details. Most are also wearing a complementary cloche. Captions and descriptions are printed from manuscript cursive.
Arnold Bachwitz, a German-born Jew who settled in Vienna, founded an international fashion publishing company in the basement of his home that produced over 50 influential magazines, Chic Parisien, the most famous among them. He died after this last edition of Croquis Parisiens was published; his wife and daughter survived him until Nazis seized the property in 1938 and took them to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Terezin, Czechoslovakia where they died in 1942.
