Butterfly Wu (1907-1989, aka Hu Die) was the first international Chinese film star. Her career began in 1925 but ended abruptly with the Japanese invasion of Shanghai in 1937. This rare poster, issued by the Chinese, must have been a subtle attempt to let the world know what was happening within China. She was among the most recognized models in Chinese advertising during the 1920s and 1930s.
