DETROIT RIOT
A Thrilling Narrative from the Lips of the Sufferers of the Late Detroit Riot, March 6, 1863. 24 pages. 8vo, wrappers. Hattiesburg: Book Farm, 1945 ONE OF 137 COPIES PRINTED IN FACSIMILE BY CHARLES HEARTMAN. Printed from Heartman's unique personal copy, with the benefit of Heartman's introduction, "Apparently there is nothing new under the sun, not even a race-riot in Detroit... This one ran true to form. The scapegoat was one Thomas Faulkner, accused of committing outrages upon Ellen Hover, a colored girl, and also a white girl. But there was no colored gentleman in this woodpile, because Faulkner was a white man... but once a mob spirit is aroused, all reasoning ends.".
