- Notes: first edition in english of the self-serving memoirs of the central figure in a notorious scandal at the court of Louis XVI. The self-styled Comtesse de Valois manipulated the Cardinal de Rohan into purchasing for Queen Marie Antoinette a diamond necklace of enormous value, which the Comtesse and her husband then broke up and sold. The author's ostensible signature appears on page 231, "but such signatures vary from copy to copy"--Sinkankas 3754.
