  • Condition: Diane Arbus's photograph of a young family in Brooklyn is overall in excellent condition. The tones of the print are rich and lush, with a wide range of dimensional values and compelling detail.

Under close examination and strong raking light, the surface of the print evidences scattered tiny craquelure-like lines, which are primarily confined to the left and right edges of the image area and the white margins. None of them result in emulsion loss and they are not visible under normal viewing condition. Otherwise, the print is clean and neat.

The upper left corner of the white margin evidences a small vertical crease. There is tiny spot of soil in the right white margin. The sheet is slightly rippled at the upper edge, as the result of the 'A Diane Arbus Photograph' label adhered to the verso. This doesn't impact the image area.

The verso and the label have somewhat yellowed and the verso evidences a few smudges of soil.

This photograph is one of ten Arbus chose in 1970 to represent her best work. It illustrates the complexity behind her portrait, which at fist glance, depicts an ordinary idyllic family togetherness, but also conveys a sense of isolation through the disconnected gaze of each subject.
