DICKENS, CHARLES. Autograph Letter Signed, "Charles Dickens / his X mark," to Lieutenant Augustus Tracey ("My Dear Admiral"):

ALSO SIGNS WITH THE MARK OF AN ILLITERATE DICKENS, CHARLES. Autograph Letter Signed, "Charles Dickens / his X mark," to Lieutenant Augustus Tracey ("My Dear Admiral"): "Keep your weather eye on that there Lion figure-head o' yourn, o' Monday, for in case I hoist my pennant aboard o' the Chartist Flagship, I'm damned if I don't pour in a broadside on you (in answer to your'n) and rake you fore and aft, you swab!" 1 page, 8vo, with integral blank. "H.M.S. Devonshire," 8 April 1848

  • Notes: Dickens refers to the Lieutenant Tracey--who is Governor of Tothill Fields Prison--as "Admiral," because in an earlier letter, Dickens promises to make him one, should he agree to his invitation. He lightheartedly adopts naval jargon to mock an upcoming labor rights demonstration by the Chartists, signing with an "X" in reference to a view of the time that many of the would-be participants were illiterate.
