DICKENS, CHARLES. Bleak House. 40 illustrations by Hablot K. Browne. 8vo, publisher's olive-green cloth stamped in blind and gilt, spine decorated

DICKENS, CHARLES. Bleak House. 40 illustrations by Hablot K. Browne. 8vo, publisher's olive-green cloth stamped in blind and gilt, spine decorated in blind and lettered "Sydney / W.R. Piddington" at foot, wear to extremities, spine browned, thin long chip to left of title panel and loss at head with lightly repaired chip; hinges starting. Bookplate of William Bartlett. London, 1853

  • Notes: first book, "colonial" edition Conforms in all other respects apart from the lettering at the foot of the spine to the first binding, appears to be similar or identical to that recorded by Carr in the Catalogue of the Vanderpoel Dickens Collection at the University of Texas (Austin, 1968) and in Smith in his first note in the description of Bleak House. Like this copy, Smith's also included 8 pages of Bradbury and Evans advertisements at the end, not usually present in other copies in the publisher's cloth. Smith 1: 10, note 1.
