DICORCIA, PHILIP-LORCA
"Mexico City." Chromogenic color print, 25 1/2 x37 3/4 inches (64.8x95.8 cm.), with diCorcia's signature, in pencil, on mount verso; framed. 1998 15,000-20,000$ Over the past several years the artist Philip-Lorca diCorcia has irrevocably changed the genre of street photography. In his essay about Lorca diCorcia's signature style, Luc Sante explains his methodology: "In rigging lights, unseen by casual pedestrians, that were intended to play on anyone stepping on a specific x-marked spot, and then positioning himself at an unobtrusive fixed distance, he constructed an elegantly rigorous formula, not unlike a mathematical equation... The unrepeatable spontaneity of the classic street shot was preserved, but the lighting utterly transformed the scenario." See: philip-lorca dicorcia, heads (PaceMacGill, 2001).
