DIETER ROTH (1930-1998) La Monte Young.

DIETER ROTH (1930-1998)

La Monte Young.
502x445 mm, 19¾x17½ inches. 1964. Signed and numbered 6/7 by the artist, "Dieter Rot," in pencil.

Made for a performance by the Theatre of Eternal Music during Roth's pivotal and contested 1964 residency at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. La Monte Young's group was in its second iteration of performers, and this concert was shortly John Cale left to pursue his role with the Velvet Underground. It was also the first use of amplified string drones by the group, a landmark moment in minimalism.

In 1964 Roth, a multidisciplinary artist, sculptor, printmaker, concrete artist, book maker, Fluxus adjacent and biodegradable artist, began and ended his tenuous residency at the Museum, which had expected him to make a "constructivist style" book more in line with early experiments. It was at this time, in the year that he made his first food sculpture, that Roth more fully began to explore materiality and participation in his work. At the end of the year Roth left for the Rhode Island School of Design.

Previously unrecorded.
