(DISABILITY RIGHTS.) Hugh Gallagher. Heavily edited draft of a portion of his autobiography "Black Bird Fly Away." 62 typescript pages with 7 additional manuscript or typescript pages interleaved, most with extensive manuscript edits in Gallagher's hand in red and black ink. 4to, 11 x 8½ inches, in contemporary plain spring binder; minimal wear. No place, circa 1977

  • Notes: Hugh Gallagher (1932-2004) of Cabin John, MD was an author who wrote on a variety of subjects. A case of polio contracted while at Haverford College left him paralyzed from the chest down. He was a prominent figure in the early period of the disability rights movement, and as a Senate aide in 1968, he helped draft the Architectural Barriers Act.

The typescript offered here tells the harrowing story of his initial illness through his release from the hospital. This draft apparently dates from 1977; on the second page it describes the events of 1952 as 25 years in the past. Laid in is a slightly worn 1977 Christmas note (presentation note?) from Gallagher to an unidentified "John." The book was published in 1998 with the revisions seen here as "Black Bird Fly Away: Disabled in an Able-Bodied World."
