DISTURNELL, JOHN. Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Méjico.

DISTURNELL, JOHN. Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Méjico. Engraved folding pocket map on two joined sheets, mounted in original blue cloth case, titled: "Mexico". Approximately 78x105 mm; bright original hand-color; a clean, crisp, and overall very handsome example of the map/span, with minor toning of the glue where the two sheets are joined, a small chip to the lower left corner, and slightest separations at few intersecting folds. New York: Disturnell, 1847

  • Notes: John Disturnell's Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico was the map used to negotiate the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, one of the most important treaties in United States history. "With this treaty, the continental limits of the United States were established, Mexico recognized Texas, and the boundary with Mexico was fixed at the Rio Grande. Apart from the Louisiana Purchase, this was the larges land transaction in American History" - Cohen, Mapping of the West, page 142.

The map is probably the most important with respect to the Mexican-American border, and one of the most important 19th century maps dealing with Texas.

This is Martin's 11th state (of 24), including updated details around the Rio Grande, also noteworthy for the additional insets that were added in the 8th state. Martin, "John Disturnell's Map of the United Mexican States,"
A la Carte, pages 204-221 (for best accounting of "editions", i.e., states).
