DMITRI BALTERMANTS (1912-1990) Forward. 1943; printed before 1990.

DMITRI BALTERMANTS (1912-1990)
Forward. 1943; printed before 1990.
Silver print, the image measuring 17¾x19¼ inches (45.1x48.9 cm.), with Baltermants' credit stamp and his Estate "Photograph by Dmitri Baltermants" and "Lifetime authentication" stamps on verso.

Provenance
The Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl

  • Condition: Baltermant's photograph "Forward", 1943; printed before 1990, is overall in good condition. The print is lustrous and contrasty, with deep blacks and bright highlights.

The surface of the print is ferrotyped and evidences the inconsistencies related to the process. Under close examination, the surface evidences scattered linear accretions and areas of period retouching, which are primarily confined to the dark area of the image in the lower quadrant, as well as a discreet soft-moon handling crease in the coat of the foreground soldier. There is also a small hard diagonal crease on the top left corner (resulting in some emulsion loss) and a longer soft one on the lower right corner. Most inconsistencies are visible in strong raking light. A few are visible under normal viewing condition but do not detract from the overall composition.

The print has no margins, and upon extremely close inspection, minuscule and superficial chips may be found at the extreme edges of the work, and more specifically a few chips with losses at the tip of the corners, but even here it is quite unobtrusive and minor.

The verso is bright and clean, with Baltermants' credit stamp and his Estate "Photograph by Dmitri Baltermants" and "Lifetime authentication" stamps on verso.

A wonderful image in large dimension by the Kremlin photographer.

Stamp reads as: This photograph was in the personal collection of Dmitri Baltermant at the time of his death - June 11, 1990
