DOBBS, ARTHUR. Remarks upon Capt. Middleton's Defence. [2], [2], [8], 171 pages. Folding map. bound with : Middleton, Christopher. A Vindication of the Conduct of Captain Christopher Middleton. 168, 48 pages. Together 2 volumes in one. 8vo, contemporary calf, minor repair to the backstrip and corners. London, 1744; Dublin,1744

  • Notes: first edition of Dobb's Remarks; first dublin edition of Middleton's Vindication (bound in the reverse order). The Dobbs-Middleton controversy centered around Dobbs's claim that Middleton had received bribes from the Hudson's Bay Company, which accounted for his inability to find a North West Passage. These works from the controversy are quite scarce as individual titles and are rarely found bound together.
