(DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.) Pérez Perdomo, Armando. Two Typed Letters Signed to Manuel Freyre y Santander.

PROTESTING THE UNITED STATES MILITARY OCCUPATION (DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.) Pérez Perdomo, Armando. Two Typed Letters Signed to Manuel Freyre y Santander. 2 leaves, 4to, punched with binder holes and then torn from binder, otherwise only minor browning. Washington, 8 December 1916

  • Notes: The Dominican Republic suffered from domestic unrest in 1916, leading the United States to send Marines in May, and ultimately to declare a state of military occupation on November 29. Pérez Perdomo was the Dominican minister to Washington at the time. The first of these two letters to the Peruvian minister expresses his government's outrage at this unilateral use of military force. He calls the occupation unusual, without precedent in the history of America ("hecho insólito, sin precedente en la historia de América") and protests to the civilized nations of the world for redress ("y protesta asimismo ante las Naciones del Mundo Civilizado"). The second letter, written later the same day, thanks the Peruvian minister for his response. The military occupation continued through 1924.
