  • Condition: Doris Ulmann's portrait of an African American man (1920s) is in overall very good condition. The impactful composition is rendered in a beautiful range of creamy and charcoal tones, characteristic of platinum prints.

At the far right center edge there is a narrow linear superficial rub, visible in our catalogue illustration. The upper edge also seems to show just a very slight warming, likely a result of the original mounting. Otherwise, the print is overall neat and clean.

The print has been tipped to a contemporary mount (this is the same size as the print), and shows the original glue used in mounting on verso. This mount has been itself tipped to the original tissue (but is detached at the upper right). The tissue also shows remnants of the glue, and an area of loss where the print was detached. There are additional small tears where the top two corners were originally attached. The lower edge (in the margin) shows some soft horizontal creases, but this (nor any of the issues noted here) impact the print itself.

The tissue mount is tipped to an original mount with an overmat. This shows some faint results of aging and handling, but is overall very good.

The tissue with Ulmann's neat, clear signature in pencil below the image.
