The majority of Doris Ulmann's photographs are unique prints and of these, most are left unsigned. As was her practice, Ulmann only signed those photographs she exhibited or intended to exhibit. She is particularly well known for her portraiture, having published several portfolios in magazines as well as several books of portraits, including Roll Jordan Roll, during her lifetime, and the seminal title published later The Appalachian photographs, amongst others.

  • Condition: This platinum print of an African American Plantation Worker, South Carolina, circa 1929-30 by Doris Ulmann is overall in excellent condition, with no flaw on its surface. The impactful composition is rendered in a beautiful range of creamy and charcoal tones, characteristic of platinum prints.

The print is tipped on the upper edge verso to the mount. The sheet verso evidences trace of the process. The mount is lightly age-darkened, with two pieces of tape on its upper edge recto, and with Ulmann's signature in pencil on mount recto.
