The majority of Doris Ulmann's photographs are unique prints and of these, most are left unsigned. As was her practice, Ulmann only signed those photographs she exhibited or intended to exhibit. From 1917 through 1925, Ulmann created approximately 150 oil pigment prints. Given the extreme difficulty in obtaining success with this process, the prints are unique monotypes. The subtle details visible in the deep shadows of this print exhibit a technical mastery of both the exposure and of the pigment process.

  • Condition: This platinum print of a Dunkard Woman, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, circa 1925-26.by Doris Ulmann is overall in excellent condition, with no flaw on its surface. The intimate portrait is rendered delicately in a beautiful range of tonal value ranging from warm black to expanded mid-tone grays, and luminous highlights around the sitter's face and hands.

The print is tipped on the upper edge verso to the mount. The sheet verso evidences trace of the process. The mount is lightly age-darkened, with two pieces of tape on its upper edge recto, and with Ulmann's signature in pencil on mount recto.
