  • Condition: Dorothea Lange's "A Sign of the Times (Depression - Mended Stockings, Stenographer, San Francisco)" (1934; printed circa 1960) is in excellent condition. The print is lush and rich, with a range of tones and a clean, bright surface.

It is only with extremely close and careful inspection that it is possible to find a very soft half-moon handling crease at the far lower left corner. This is nearly imperceptible, and does not in any way detract from the overall presentation. Otherwise, the surface of the print appears without flaw.

The narrow margins evidence some scattered handling creases, as well as a couple small and isolated soiling marks. None of these impact the image area. Print verso also evidence scattered and faint soiling, again, not impacting the front at all. With three of Lange's Berkeley address stamps on verso, one of which is smudged.

Overall a beautiful example of Lange's iconic image, replete with both texture and narrative suggestion.
