DOROTHEA LANGE (1895-1965) Girl on porch, Macon County, Georgia. July 1937.

DOROTHEA LANGE (1895-1965)
Girl on porch, Macon County, Georgia. July 1937. Silver print, the image measuring 7½x9½ inches (19.1x24.1 cm.), with Lange's F.S.A. credit stamp, the Farm Security Administration stamp, a numeric notation in pencil, and the typed location and date, on verso.

  • Condition: Dorothea Lange's impactful portrait of a "Girl on porch, Macon County, Georgia" taken July 1937 is overall in good condition. The vintage print displays fine details in the depiction of the sitter and crisp, clear tones.

Under close examination, the surface of the ferrotyped print evidences scattered surface impressions associated with that process, but also of a photograph that has been frequently handled. These include: an area of superficial scratches (no emulsion loss) in the background of the upper quadrant (more specifically in the upper right quadrant), a crease on the lower right corner, scattered few tiny specs of emulsion loss, pinholes on each corner, as well as a few short creases with a bit of emulsion loss on the extreme edges of the print (the print has no margins).

However, its surface inconsistencies are primarily visible in strong, raking light and located around the image area, and as such do not detract from the overall presentation at all.

Though noted for the purposes of a detailed report, these imperfections are not at all disruptive to the viewing of the image nor do they impact the beauty of the image.

The verso is clean, with Lange's FSA credit stamp, the Farm Security Administration stamp, a numeric notation in pencil, and the typed location and date, on verso.
