Provenance
From the Collection of John Dixon, son of Dorothea Lange; to the Present Owner

  • Condition: Dorothea Lange's "May Day Demonstrations, San Francisco Civic Center" (1934; printed before 1965) is in very good to excellent condition.

The print is overall neat, bright, and clean, with lush middle tones and lustrous surface. Upon close inspection in strong, raking light it is possible to find a couple nearly imperceptible and unobtrusive imperfections, including a soft handling mark near the upper right corner and a couple tiny superficial impressions near the lower edge. These minor inconsistencies do not at all detract from the overall presentation, which highlights Lange's skill in documentation as well as vivid, emotive portraiture.

There are narrow margins on three sides of the image, but the print is trimmed to the edge of the image area at the bottom. The margins are clean and neat, as is print verso. There are numeric notations in pencil in an unknown hand on verso.

Provenance: From the Collection of John Dixon, son of Dorothea Lange; to the Present Owner
