Portrait of Jerome Haas Bayer. Silver print, the image measuring 3 3/4x3 1/4 inches (9.5x8.3 cm.), flush mounted and tipped to a larger mount 5x4 7/8 inches (12.7x12.4 cm.), with Lange's signature and date, in pencil, on print recto and her second signature and date, also in pencil, on the larger mount recto. 1931

  • Notes: Originally from the Personal Collection of Marvin Sadik (1932-2013), director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1969-81; acquired by a San Francisco dealer in the 1970s; to a Private Collector.


    Jeremy Haas Bayer (1897-1992) graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a law degree and immediately began performing in one-man theater shows. During World War II, Bayer was the theater consultant for the United Service Organizations in Bremerton, Washington, where he organized the Bremerton Theater Project. After the war, he returned to New York, where he concentrated on theater work, writing, and teaching. His papers are in the Leo Baeck Institute, Center for Jewish History, New York.
