The New National Era. Volume II, Number 9. 2 pages, folio [complete]; several small cellotape repairs, owner's sticker of Manet Fowler covering about 20 words of text. Washington, 09 March 1871 During the period of Reconstruction, Douglass was associated with a Washington based paper called the New Era. Publication began in January 1870 under J. Sella Martin. Douglass purchased the paper in late 1870 and became the owner-editor, changing the newspaper's name to New National Era. Articles in this issue deal with U.S. relations with Haiti and Santo Domingo, probably written by Douglass himself.
