DOUGLASS TURNS DOWN AN OLD MENTOR DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. Autograph Letter Signed, to Reverend Thomas James, expressing regret that he has no positions of employment available and that he is not allowed to seek offices in other departments. One page, 8vo. Washington, 06 April 1877
- Notes: Thomas James was a preacher in New Bedford. Upon his arrival in 1840 one of his parishioners was Frederick Douglass. Douglass impressed James with his talks to the congregation, and he permitted Douglass to preach. As a lay preacher, Douglass matured into the speaker who would later galvanize American public opinion.
