DOX THRASH (1892 - 1965) Glory Be!

DOX THRASH (1892 - 1965)
Glory Be!

Carborundum mezzotint and etching on cream wove paper, circa 1941-1942. 187x251 mm; 7 3/8x9 7/8 inches, full margins. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin.

John Ittmann credits Thrash among other African-American artists, including Hale Woodruff, who moved from the South to the North during the first half of the 20th century with the creation of a "rural picturesque" aesthetic. This print is one of many depicting the American South that "presents images that show life in the country as impoverished but strengthened by family, community, companionship and religion".

We have found no other impressions of this very scarce print at auction; Ittmann notes only two known impressions. Ittmann 101.
