DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN. The Sign of Four.

DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN. The Sign of Four. 8vo, original white wrappers printed in black, staples slightly impressed to wraps, few light smudges, small corner crease at rear; contents clean and unmarked; preserved in custom 1/4 cloth drop-back case (LMS booklabel). New York: P.F. Collier, 1891

  • Notes: first american edition, among the rarest conan doyle titles. Volume 11, Number 16 of the "Once a Week Library," and with 'The Siege of Sunda Gunge' (by H. Greenhough Smith, unsigned) on pp. 113-24. ABPC and Rare Book Hub list only one previous auction appearance (Rosenbaum copy, Sotheby's London, 17 December, 1998, lot 289). Green and Gibson list this as the first American edition (secondary sources describe this edition as a piracy), although Lippincott's did issue it as a complete novel in their magazine for February, 1890. Green and Gibson A7b.
