Dryden Ernst Deutsch 1883-1938 Paris Matin. 1926 17.375 x 12.375 inches. Imp. Joseph-Charles, Paris. Condition B.. light horizontal fold: minor paper loss, abrasions, and darkening along margins. A native of Vienna, where he studied under Gustav Klimt, the young Ernst Deutsch moved to Berlin around 1911 and changed his name to Dryden. He began with immediate success to design posters utilizing auniquely Germanic graphic style for such companies as Admiral's Casino, Richard's Grill Room, Salamander, and Mercedes, among others. After WWI, he returned to Vienna in 1919 and opened his own fashion studio. The mid-1920s found him in Paris, designing covers for the German magazine Die Dame as well as posters for a number of prestigious clients such as Bugatti, Zenith, and this newspaper, Paris Matin. This image is characterized by the elegance, power, and simplicity of this period. Using only three colors red, blue, and black as well as the white of the paper, he stylizes a rooster and adds a touch of whimsy with beautiful, dancing, hand-designed letters Another version of this poster exists with the title "Paris Matinal" In 1933, Dryden immigrated to Hollywood where he became a famous costumer for movies such as "Lost Horizon" and "The Prisoner of Zenda" and stage designer for the movie industry. ref.
