Du Bois's monumental study of the social conditions in which the negroes of the Seventh Ward of Philadelphia lived, and one of the first scientifically conducted sociological studies ever undertaken in this country. Du Bois's study resulted in his becoming the director of Atlanta University's Department for Studies of the Negro Problem. The magazine excerpts bound with Du Bois's work include pieces by Booker T.
