  • Notes: Arnold Eagle was a documentary photographer who worked to show both the negative and positive aspects of the world around him. Working in New York during the 30s, Eagle spent a great deal of time photographing life on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and its Jewish community. In addition to his documentary work, Eagle also became a photography teacher for the National Youth Administration.

The N. Y. A. was formed in 1935 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and began under the direction of the Works Projects Administration. Its goal was to provide continuing education and part time work for young Americans during the Depression. This volume contains images of machinists, dress-makers, switchboard operators, carpenters, upholsterers, nurse's aids, photographers, and more. During the 1930s, Eagle produced other maquettes, including one devoted to children.
