EAKINS, THOMAS. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed recipient (lacking salutation),

EAKINS, THOMAS. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed recipient (lacking salutation), criticizing an account of the boxing match between James E. "Doc" Payne and Joe Butler in September 1898. 3 1/4 pages, 8vo, written on a single folded sheet; minor scattered soiling. Np, [circa September 1898]

  • Notes: "Much ado about nothing. I have read with surprise in the Telegraph of Sept. 27th an article headed Butler's Foul Knockout Blows. The article contains false and misleading statements. In the first round, Butler to rid himself of his clinging antagonist, threw him to the thickly padded floor instead of waiting for the referee to separate them or order a break. This was a distinct infraction of the Rules of the Marquis of Queensbury (not of the Decalogue) and brought from the referee a severe reprimand. . . . In the second round there was no unfairness, but Mr. Payne received a blow that rendered him unconscious beyond the limit of ten seconds, an accident likely to happen in any contest between heavyweights. The contestants in the Arena exhibitions use large padded gloves and the question is one of skill and endurance, not of injury. Every precaution is taken to avoid accidents and a physician is always present to examine the men before they are allowed to contest."
Eakins, who at the time of writing was in the midst of producing a number of paintings depicting wrestling and boxing matches, witnessed the infamous fight between Payne & Butler that nearly ended in a riot after Butler had controversially knocked out Payne on September 26, 1898 at the Philadelphia Arena; the Arena served as the backdrop for Easkins's 1899 painting, Between the Rounds.
