- Notes: one of the first american fiction bestsellers. Susanna Rowson came to Philadelphia as an actress in 1793. Charlotte, first published in her native London circa 1790, was extremely popular (surprisingly, no copies of the edition are located) and Carey republished it soon after her arrival in the States.
