  • Notes: Bound in the order given above. Holmes notes that in Burnings Bewailed, Mather "enquires into the scriptures to show the kind of sins which the Lord was wont to punish by destructive fires." The Great Fire of 2 October 1711 was among the worst ever seen by the region, destroying over 100 houses and the town hall. This second edition, though similar to the first edition, appears to be reset. Holmes located 9 copies of the second edition of Burnings Bewailed (of which 2 are defective). The second Mather title bound into this volume -- A Discourse concerning the Grace of Courage -- was a sermon given by Mather to the Artillery Society of Boston. Holmes comments that this sermong "probably took two full hours in delivery." Evans 1565, 1997 and 1474; Holmes, Increase Mather 18B and 35.
