[Saybrook Synod.] [A Confession of Faith Owned and Consented to by the Elders and Messengers of the Churches in the Colony of Connecticut in New-England, Assembled by Delegation at Say Brook.] 12mo, contemporary calf, worn; lacking endpapers, first 11 leaves, and final 3 leaves, except for leaf C1 (detached), leaf F4 and H4 defective, some dampstaining and edge wear; "Say Brook Platforme" pencilled 4 times on inner boards, inscriptions of Abraham and Deborah Chalker (of an early Saybrook family) on leaves F2 and L1. [New London, CT: Thomas Short, 1710 (i.e. 1711)]

  • Notes: Generally regarded as the first book printed in Connecticut, preceded only by broadsides and a 37-page pamphlet. It was also an important work, shaping the colony's religious development for years to come. This partial copy lacks its title page, but includes the second title page with its 1710 imprint (pictured). "One of the most important books printed in the eighteenth century"--Streeter sale II:663. Only one copy has appeared at auction since Streeter's in 1967. Church 844; Evans 1486; Sabin 15447.
