(EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT.) West, Benjamin. The New-England Almanack, or Lady's and Gentleman's Diary, for . . . 1767. [24] pages. 12mo, stitched; foxing, lacking upper corners of last three leaves with slight loss of text; uncut. In a 1/2 morocco slipcase bearing the bookplate of Elisha Whipple McGuire. Providence, RI: Sarah Goddard and Company, [1766]

  • Notes: A rousing introduction celebrates the repeal of the Stamp Act: "It is to you, my countrymen, I am in a great measure, indebted for my freedom; it was you, that so nobly expressed yourselves to bring about a repeal of the Stamp-Act, that so lately hung over our heads like a heavy cloud; an Act, in its nature detestable; plotted and contrived by a set of wicked designing men; and had it taken its place among us, would have enslaved millions of loyal subjects, and subverted the whole constitution of English America." Alden, Rhode Island 346 ("the first Rhode Island almanac to have a cut on the title page"; state B with revised May 7 entry); Drake 12818; Evans 10521. Provenance: American Art Association's McGuire sale, 14 January 1931, lot 23.
