(EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT.) Willard, Samuel. [Mercy Magnified on a Penitent Prodigal, or a Brief Discourse, wherein Christs Parable of the Lost Son Found, Is Opened and Applied.] [2], 390 pages; lacks the title, the first two leaves of the preface, text leaf R8, the terminal text leaf and the errata page. 8vo, contemporary sheep, worn; first leaf present torn with loss, foxing and toning; early or contemporary marginalia throughout, including some composed in rhymed couplets. [Boston: Samuel Green, 1684]

  • Notes: "Willard acquired distinction as the result of a series of lectures in which he systematically surveyed the entire field of theology. As a master of learning and logic, whose sermons were frequently beyond the comprehension of his simpler hearers, he scorned the 'Enthusiamsm' of the Baptist preachers... He pointed out that the Puritans had not intended to establish toleration in New England, and suggested that the Baptists go and hew their own colonies out of the wilderness instead of troubling those established by others"--DAB. Evans 379; Sabin 104094.
