Richard Hakluyt.

The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation.

London: George Bishop, 1600, 1599, 1600
[24], 606, [16], 312, 204; [16], 868 pages (erratically paginated). 3 volumes in 2. Folio, early calf, moderate wear, rebacked with portion of backstrips laid down, rear board of first volume detached along with pages II:199-204; top of first title page restored including initial "The," without the suppressed Voyage to Cadiz section (pages I:607-620), without the map as usual, a few ink stains and contemporary manuscript notes in margins, worming to final leaves of Volume II; worn additional copy of Volume II title page laid in.

  • Notes: Expanded second edition, later state. "It is difficult to overrate the importance and value of this extraordinary collection of voyages"--Sabin 29595. The third volume is entirely dedicated to early exploration of the Americas, including a list of the Virginia settlers of 1587, with Virginia Dare listed as the first of the "Children borne in Virginia" (page 287).

The Volume I title page is in the scarce and unusual 4th state (with River Ob instead of Riuer), per the Hakluyt handbook, page 492-494, 504-505.

    Church 322; European Americana 599/45, 600/51; Hill Pacific Voyages, pp. 131-2; Palau 112039; Sabin 29596, 29597, 29598.

Provenance: English antiquarian Daniel Wray (1701-1783) per inked stamp on verso of title page; Sotheby's New York sale, 2 February 1985, lot 190, to the consignor.
