EARLY HISTORY OF NEW ENGLAND (EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT.) Morton, Nathaniel. New England's Memoriall: Or, A brief Relation of the most Memorable and Remarkable Passages of the Providence of God, manifested to the Planters of New-England in America: With special Reference to the first Colony thereof, Called New-Plimouth. [10], 248 pages. 8vo, later morocco gilt extra by W. Pratt, beautifully rebacked with the original backstrip, all edges gilt; 1 1/2x1 1/2 inch area of manuscript facsimile on the title; early owner's booklabel on the front pastedown; morocco case by Zaehnsdorff. Boston: [John Allen] for D. Henchman, 1721
- Notes: a new england cornerstone. This the scarce second American edition, with the supplement by Josiah Cotton. The first edition of 1669 -- a great rarity -- is considered the first historical work published in New England. "Nathaniel Morton, a nephew of Governor Bradford, was secretary to the General Court of Massachusetts from 1645, thus having favorable opportunities of gathering information. The work is arranged in chronological order, and is filled with particulars of the greatest interest. The voyage of the Mayflower is given in detail, as is also the story of the landing and first settlement of the Pilgrims. The text is interspersed with several elegiac poems, epitaphs, and acrostics"--Church 605 (for the first edition, this edition not in Church); Sabin 51013; Evans 2267.
