  • Notes: Abram Lincoln Harris Jr. (1899-1963) is considered the first important Black scholar in the field of economics. He received his PhD from Columbia in 1930, and then taught at Howard and the University of Chicago. Among his academic interests was the British economist and philosopher John Stuart Mill (1806-1873). Harris published an article, "John Stuart Mill: Government and Economy," in the Social Service Review in June 1963.

Offered here is a 3-volume 1867 second-edition set of Mill's "Dissertations and Discussions," a compilation of articles. It is followed by Volume IV of a later expanded 1875 edition, containing articles published after 1867 which were not included in the earlier edition. They bear Harris's ownership stamp from his time as a professor of economics at the University of Chicago from 1945 to 1963. The address, 6019 Ingleside, was his residence from at least his 1950 appearance in Who's Who in Colored America until his death. Each of the four volumes contains heavy underlining on dozens of pages, and frequent marginal notes reflecting Harris's insights.
