Eddie Rickenbacker

Large Photograph Signed and Inscribed, "To Carl M Tichenor / Merry Xmas / and / Happy New Year / Capt E.v. Rickenbacker / 1925,"

full-length portrait showing him standing with President Coolidge on the White House lawn while they hold a model of a biplane. Inscribed in the image, lower right. Ink identification written in the image at lower left in unknown hand. 13x10¼ inches; mounted to board trimmed to size; very slight warping.

Np, 1925.

  • Notes: Collector's inscription: "President Calvin Coolidge / & / Cap't Eddie Rickenbacker / on the White House lawn / Washington D.C. / fondling the Pulitzer Trophy."

The Pulitzer Trophy was awarded to the winner of the Pulitzer Trophy Race--the highlight of the National Air Races that took place in the U.S. between 1920 and 1925. The best-known trophies were cast in sterling silver from an Art Deco statue by Mario Josef Korbel featuring a women whose wings reach up toward an airplane; either the biplane in this photograph is not the Pulitzer Trophy, or the design had changed.

Carl Martin Tichenor (1887-1946) was an automobile manufacturer who was Production Chief of the Rickenbacker Motor Company, which built the Rickenbacker car in Detroit between 1922 and 1927.
