  • Notes: ". . . I have not had a copy of the 'Grand Trunk Herald' for several years. It is barely possible I may be able to obtain one from friends in Michigan and in case I am successful will forward it to you."
The first newspaper written, typeset, and printed aboard a train was the Grand Trunk Herald, a two-sheet weekly which served a few hundred of the Grand Trunk Railroad's employees. Thomas Edison founded the paper in 1861-62 when he--as a 14-year-old selling snacks and newspapers to passengers on the Grand Trunk to Detroit--set up a printing press in a baggage car. Most of the paper's work, including reporting, editing, printing, and distributing, was done by Edison.
