EDISON, THOMAS A. Typed Letter Signed, "Thos A Edison," to Admiral George Burd, with two holograph corrections, containing a list of questions about submarines with responses by Lieutenant C. Y. Johnstonwritten in. 2 pages, two single 4to sheets, Edison laboratory stationery; first page a bit toned. Framed. Orange, 16 April 1917 E3, 000/4,000 At the start of World War I, Edison was named President of agovernment spon-sored Naval Consulting Board. In December 1916, Secretary of Navy Josephus Daniels visited Edison in New Jersey to discuss the Allied difficulties with the German u-boats. When the United States entered the war on 6 April 1917 (just 10 days before this letter) Edison devoted his entire laboratory to submarine improvements and began sending out inquiries for information.
