    Edmund Darch Lewis was born in Philadelphia and as a teenager studied under the artist Paul Weber for five years. He achieved success quickly and as a young man exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design in New York. Lewis was mainly known for his landscapes and marine paintings, though also painted portraits. He traveled extensively and painted landscapes throughout Pennsylvania and the Northeast United States. Aside from being a well-known Luminist painter, Lewis came from a prominent Philadelphia family and amassed a notable collection of art and antiques during his lifetime.
