EDMUND TESKE (1911-1996)
James Whitney, composite with a design of his creation. 1970s.
Silver print, the image measuring 11 1/8x9¼ inches (28.3x23.5 cm.), the primary mount 15 5/8x9¾ inches (40x24.8 cm.), the secondary mount 30¼x22 3/8 inches (76.8x57 cm.), with Teske's signature in pencil on the primary mount recto, and his title and date in pencil on the secondary mount verso.

Provenance
Stephen Cohen Gallery, Los Angeles; to the Collection of Neil Robert Berzak

  • Condition: Teske's photograph of James Whitney, 1970s, is in nearly excellent condition. The tones of the print are rich and lush, with compelling detail.

Under close examination in strong raking light, we can notice a small area of exceedingly faint surface linear impressions (left to the check). There is also a minuscule spec of retouching in the upper left quadrant. Both inconsistencies are not visible under typical conditions, but only noticeable in strong raking light, and as such, do not detract from the overall complex composition.

The print has no margins, but a narrow black contour with clean edges.

The primary brown mount is clean and neat, the secondary white mount slightly soiled, with Teske's signature in pencil on the primary mount recto, and his title and date in pencil on the secondary mount verso.
