EDMUND TESKE (1911-1996) Portrait of Chris Volraft. 1945.

EDMUND TESKE (1911-1996)
Portrait of Chris Volraft. 1945.
Silver print, the image measuring 8 3/8x7½ inches (21.3x19.1 cm.), the mount 20x13 inches (50.8x33 cm.), with Teske's signature in pencil on mount recto, and his initials, title, and negative date in pencil on mount verso.

Provenance
Stephen Cohen Gallery, Los Angeles; to the Collection of Neil Robert Berzak

  • Condition: Teske's vintage photograph of Chris Volraft, 1945 is overall in very good condition. The print is rich and lustrous, with beautiful delineations of tones within the figure and bright highlights.

Under close examination in raking light, the surface evidences a few slight superficial inconsistencies, which are located around the image area, not entering the sitter. There is a very faint linear scratch on the upper right corner with a few minuscule specs of emulsion loss. There are also two faint surface impressions on the extreme lower edge, presumably prior to the mounting. These are not at all apparent under typical viewing conditions, but only noticeable when examining the print in strong raking light.

The print has no margins, but a narrow black contour. Here a few minuscule chips may be found, especially on the outer right edge. This is not entering the image area.

The mount evidences a few signs of light handling, but the presentation remains neat, with Teske's signature in pencil on mount recto, and his initials, title, and negative date in pencil on mount verso.
