ÉDOUARD BALDUS (1813-1889)
Church of Beaune * Alyscamps, Saint-Honorat, Arles. 1851 and 1853.
Together, 2 albumen prints, the images measuring 10½x7¾ and 7 1/8x9¾ inches (26.7x19.7 and 18.1x24.8 cm.), the mounts approximately 17 3/8x12 inches (44x30.5 cm.), the first with Baldus' signature stamp and the printed title and number on mount recto, and the second with Baldus' signature, title, and number in the negative, and his signature stamp on mount recto.

Provenance
The Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl

  • Condition: This pair of photographs by Baldus is in very good condition. The tones of the prints are rich and strong, with clear contrast, delineation, and dimension, and exquisite graphic values.

Under close examination, both surfaces are clean and bright.

The mount of Print 1 is age-darkened and evidences faint foxing. This is not impacting the image area. With Baldus' signature stamp and the printed title and number on mount recto, and the second with Baldus' signature, title, and number in the negative.

The mount of Print 2 is slightly warm with faint foxing specs both on recto and verso. There is a small area of foxing specs in the left margin, which are slightly entering and impacting the sky in the upper left corner of the image area. While noticeable, it doesn't detract from the beauty of the composition. With Baldus' signature, title, and number in the negative, and his signature stamp on mount recto.
