  • Notes:
Eduardo Paolozzi created the screenprint series, As Is When, as an homage to the Viennese philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose linguistic analytic philosophy was a source of inspiration to Paolozzi and many artists in the 1960s. Paolozzi was drawn to the philosopher's texts as well as his life, as he felt Wittgenstein's exile and cultural isolation from Vienna mirrored his own upbringing as a son of Italian parents in Scotland. He saw this project as a "combined autobiography" of their lives.

This print in the series relates to Wittgenstein's 1939 trip to New York, in which he visited his brother Paul who had fled to the US at the onset of the Nazi occupation. This series is considered one of the earliest examples of Pop printmaking in England, and marks the height of Paolozzi's collaboration with his longterm printer Christopher Prater of Kelpra Studio.
