(EDUCATION--KANSAS.) Scrapbook belonging to William Bern Townsend of Western University. 19 leaves with copious material affixed to both sides, including programs, identification cards, actual photographs as well as clipped photographs of the school and the region, with typical pages of autographs from teachers and well-wishers; leaves as rather toned and brittle, resulting in some chipping from a few leaves, not affecting the contents in any serious manner. Kansas, 1934

  • Notes: Western University (1865-1943) had its beginnings in the Quindaro, Kansas home of founder Eben Blachley. The town itself was founded by abolitionists and the school was specifically started up to educate recently freed slaves. It was the earliest school for African Americans west of the Mississippi and the only one to operate in the state of Kansas. In the early decades of the twentieth century, Western''s music department was nationally recognized for its talent. The Jackson Jubilee Singers toured from about 1907 until 1940. Eva Jesse, one of the school''s best known alumni, collaborated with both Virgil Thomson and George Gershwin. Nora Douglas Holt became a well known composer and Etta Moten Barnett sang the lead in Porgy and Bess.
