IMPORTANT LETTER REGARDING SCHOOL INTEGRATION (EDUCATION--SCHOOL INTEGRATION.) HIGGINSON, THOMAS WENTWORTH. Autograph Letter Signed to Lewis G. Janes regarding the admission of Colored children to Newport schools, together with a carte-de-visite of Higginson. Folio leaf, folded to form four quarto pages, written on three sides, with the original envelope. Newport, RI, 1866

  • Notes: a letter of exceptional content regarding the integration of a newport school. Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911), abolitionist, reformer, and educator, writes to a concerned citizen regarding the admission of colored children to the Newport schools. He goes into great detail regarding the number of colored children in the formerly all-white school, and states the number of children ("about a dozen, all or nearly all from one school") who were withdrawn as a result of the integration of the school. He explains how a colored citizen, Mitchell P. Haynes, came before the Board and claimed the right to have his child attend the school nearest his home. This led to the admission of more colored children, of which Higginson writes that the number increases with each new season. This was a relatively smooth integration, which followed some ten years or so after the integration of Boston''s Smith Street School.
